Goal Fest

On the back of their first win of the season against Isca, Taunton Civil Service A travelled to Cullumpton to take on ECV Hornets seeking to put their league campaign into positive figures.

The first 10 seconds did not go to plan. Taunton carelessly gave the ball away from the push back and then seemed to freeze as a Hornets forward was able to hand an immediate goal advantage to the home team. Given the shock they needed Taunton started to play some of the hockey that had been played the week before. Quick passing allowed Taunton to play the game in the Hornets half and finally turn pressure into goals. Josh Stevenson was able to score his second goal for the club turning in a cross at the far post and Mark Sawyer was able to continue his goal scoring run by adding another before half time.

Half time saw Taunton 2-1 up however the second half unfortunately saw a number of Taunton errors. Despite continually pushing and threatening the Hornets goal Taunton were unable to convert any further chances while the Hornets threatened to break, and break they did. Two goals in quick succession saw Taunton 3-2 down midway through the second half and as Taunton tried to push for an equaliser Hornets extended their lead to two goals.

Staring at a fourth loss of the season Taunton did not give up. A second goal from Mark Sawyer bought the deficit to 4-3. With time still on the clock Jason Harris, having come back on the pitch in midfield was able to make the most of the Hornets inability to cleat the ball out of the area to level the scores in what turned out to be the last play of the game.

Taunton can be relieved to have come out of the game with a point however will also feel that they played the better hockey and created clearer and better chances at goal. However the point moves us ever closer to a positive point’s difference and a record of 1 win and two draws in the last three games.
