“I went to a fight the other night, and a hockey game broke out” – Rodney Dangerfield

Taunton CS made it four wins from four games in what was a slightly heated encounter against Chard. Altohugh the game was largely played in good spirit it appeared that Chard’s “in-fighting” aided the Taunton casue in achieving a fourth win of the season.

The absence of Dan Adams in defence saw Julian Brown step into the starting 11 while Lee Slade made his club competative debut coming off the bench towards the end of the first half. The first half saw almost total dominance from Taunton CS who, right from the start, were able to control the pace of the game and play the game deep within the Chard half of the pitch. Having brushed of the cobwebs of a slightly disappointeing performance the week before Taunton made the most of the space abley moving the ball around the pitch and creating a number of chances to take the lead.

It was therfore surprising that the score at half time was 0-0. This was after two, first half diallowed goals. The first of which was pulled back for a Taunton CS foot (although Mark Sawyer is still adament that it shold have stood) and the second not allowed as the umpire considered no advantage was coming from a Chard foul. In general the message at half time was to do exactly what was done in the first half……..except score. Thank fully Simon Jones took Mark Sawyers advice at a resulting short corner of “why don’y you just put it in”. With that helpful advice Simon Jones drag flicked the ball passed the outstretched Chard keeper. Simon, who was later voted man of the match, followed this up with a second goal of the game and Ben Witt added a further to take Taunton CS into a 3 – 0 lead. The second half also saw Jim Smith pick up the clubs first yellow card of the season for a raising his stick above his head. In addition Chard’s day went from bad to worse as one of their players stormed of the pitch in disgust at their performance only stopping to collect his kit bag.

Unfortunately Taunton CS were unable to match the clean sheet of the week before as they allwoed Chard to save some face by getting one back in the last ten minutes. Despite that Taunton can be very pleased with their performance which sees them take 12 points out of the first four games. The next fixture sees a visit from East Devon – a team who have also won their first four games in what may be an enstemly important fixture come the business end of the season.
